Living in Lefke

Lefke is a town in the west of North Cyprus overlooking Morphou (Güzelyurt) Bay, and since 2016 the centre of the Lefke district. The town is known for its citrus fruit; the monument in the town centre stands for the area's orange groves. The European University of Lefke is here, which brings students and academics to the town all year round.

The area offers a quiet everyday life close to nature, away from city crowds. The Lefke Municipality holds a Date Festival every year; the 16th took place in 2025.

History and places to visit

Lefke has historically been a copper mining town: copper was first mined in the Middle Bronze Age and mining resumed after 1921 under the Cyprus Mines Corporation. Nearby Gemikonağı (Karavostasi) was a port town for trade with Egypt in the Roman period.

• Ancient Soli: near Gemikonağı on the shore of Morphou Bay, with a Roman-period theatre and temple remains.

• Vouni Palace: about 9 km west of Gemikonağı, on a hilltop about 250 m above sea level.
